Become a Local Governor

We are continually seeking local volunteers to serve on our Local Governing Boards as Foundation Governors. If you are interested in serving one of our schools and fulfil the criteria below, please contact Mark Mountcastle (CEO - ceo@olhoc.org.uk) in the first instance.

It is a hugely rewarding role, giving back to your community and we look forward to welcoming you.

Key Requirements & Steps:

  • Be a Practising Catholic: This is the primary requirement, along with being over 18, to ensure commitment to the Church's teachings and the school's Catholic character.
  • Express Interest: Contact Shrewsbury diocese or the CEO directly to enquire about vacancies and the application process.
  • Diocesan Appointment: The Bishop appoints Foundation Governors, not the school, to safeguard the Catholic ethos, so you must be willing to serve the Diocese's educational vision.
  • Skill & Experience Diversity: Governing bodies need various skills (finance, HR, building, safeguarding, community), so you don't need teaching experience; your life experience is valuable.
  • Time Commitment: Expect around 4-6 hours monthly for meetings and school visits.  Training and support will be provided.
  • References & Checks: Expect your Parish Priest to provide a reference, and safeguarding checks will be conducted.

What You'll Do:

  • Uphold and develop the Catholic character and ethos of the school.
  • Help make strategic decisions and ensure the school's effective operation.
  • Bring your professional and personal skills to the board.
